Building an Online Portfolio

LinkedIn Learning Summary

LinkedIn instructor Jason Fox first looks at the designer’s lifestyle as a whole and begin determining the goals of their portfolio from there.

An online portfolio is supposed to change as the designer’s life changes. If the designer moves to live somewhere else they must understand how the new place is different from the old. They will need to determine what kind of support structures they will have available and what kind of needs the designer’s potential clients or employers will have in this new place.

Below are examples of design two portfolios, one from the United States and one from the UK.

Above: A Portfolio from graphic designer Jesse Nyberg, in Los Angeles California. Nyberg’s portfolio is organized into projects. Overall, their catalog shows an interest in urban musicality and athleticism with their analog collages and album covers.

Above: Graphic designer Paul Mullen’s portfolio page. They are based in Aberdeen, Scotland. The page is minimalist, with bold type and a small preview scroll of the larger portfolio. Their bold type and warm, solid colors emphasize their focus on designs for sport racing.

Both designers have done design on sports logos and products, but Nyberg’s vintage feel fits their urban setting, while Mullen’s crisp blocks of color are good for visibility on mountainous trails.
