LinkedIn Learning Summary

Cara St. Hilaire lays out a guide for aspiring designers to follow in order to start learning and practicing design skills. In her course, she goes over general information about the graphic design process, and then links to other LinkedIn courses that provide deeper understanding of that topic. 

During the course, St. Hilaire offers several design tools for photo editing and layout based on what “most designers” use. It isn’t clear whether “most designers” includes designers outside of the Unites States. Using Google Trends can show how interested users around the world are in these programs compared to their competitors.  

Compared to competing software Microsoft Publisher and Affinity Publisher, Adobe InDesign held the highest popularity in search trends in the past five years. Two other Adobe products, Photoshop and Illustrator, have the same prestige compared to their competitors. 

Google Trends does have limits. The sample size is based on people who use google as a search engine and the results only record search queries, so they don’t reflect the actual amount of people who use the programs. 

Still, the trends suggest that the tools St. Hilaire recommends for designers are the most known ones around the globe. In the future, there may be other tools from different countries that will challenge these. Until then, the Adobe suite will help beginning designers start their work.
